Customers often ask can the hearth be in one piece? It all depends, if it is an electric fire, gas fire or the stove is suitable for a 12mm hearth then the hearth can be a decorative hearth in one piece. Also we have to take into consideration of lifting large hearths into a home and safely being able to install it. If it is a stove where a high temperaturte can transfer downwards the hearth should be slabbed for safety. Slabbing hearths allows the expansion of heat to run down the joints and reduce the chances of the hearth damaging / breaking.
We are often asked by our customers how they should maintain a hearth. For polished granite or glass, you can use normal household cleaning products. For limestone, quartz or any other natural stone you should follow guidelines and use products suitable. Our most popular choice of hearth is slate, and this should be cleaned periodically. Here are some step by step tips to help:
– Firstly, wipe down the slate with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris and allow the slate to air dry completely.
– Now pour a small drop of slate sheen oil onto a clean, dry cloth and apply the oil using small circular motions.
– Finally, use another clean, dry cloth to once more buff in an extra shine to the hearth. This will help to absorb excess oil and will help seal, protect and rejuvenate your slate hearth.
